A half hour later, Suzette stood at the entrance to the Plaza’s Grand Ballroom. Lois had gone all out this year. The party was in full swing. Beautiful carved crown molding circled the Waterford crystal chandelier and walls. Mini lights along the walls glowed purple, green, and white. Candelabras set on Irish linen decorated each table as bone china sparkled away. But the elegance, along with the single violinist playing at the end of the room, didn’t compare to the man who stopped in front her. He offered her his arm. Taking it, she studied his profile.

“Where are you taking me, Dirk?”

Leaning into her, he whispered. “If I had my way…”

She cut him off. “Don’t.”

Nodding, he glided them to the bar. “Maker’s Mark with a splash.”

Shaking her head she said, “I’ll have a glass of champagne tonight.”

Dirk held up two fingers. When the bartender put the flutes on the bar Dirk handed her one of them. “Why champagne?”

“I need a clear head this evening.”

“Aubrie Arnet is here. He asked about you a few minutes ago.” He pointed to a table in the far corner. “Lois, her husband Mike and I are one table away from you. I wanted her to put me with you, but she wouldn’t. She said, and I quote, she “likes her job too much.’”

“Smart woman,” Suzette said, sipping her drink.

She forced her eyes away from his smoky ones before she said something she might regret. Aubrie beckoned to her with a wave of his hand. Damned, she’d thought she’d get in at least one drink before the politics started. Couldn’t they for one night give it a rest? Screw Adams.

Dirk pointed with his glass like she hadn’t noticed. Now she had no choice but to head over there. “I’ll talk to you later, Dirk.”

“I’ll escort you to your table. Adams just walked in with Miles Cabot.”

“Miles?”

“Yes.”

Disappointed, she went to turn toward the main entrance. “Don’t. Adams is staring holes through you to get your attention. Any reaction from you puts him control. You run the game, not him,” Dirk said.

“Okay, I’ll play it your way, Dirk. For now…”
